F1 News: Drivers Call For Huge Belgian GP Changes Ahead Of Spa-Francorchamps Race Weekend
F1 drivers have been calling for changes to be made to the Belgian Grand Prix ahead of the race this weekend.
The tragic death of 18-year-old Dutch racing driver, Dilano van 't Hoff, earlier this month emphasised safety concerns for many. Van 't Hoff was competing in a Formula Regional European Championship race at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit which many feel should not have been allowed to go ahead in the conditions.
Many F1 drivers have been calling for changes to be made to the circuit. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll said to Sky Sports F1:
"It's not fair what happened, and that corner needs to be looked at and changed, because we lost two young talents in like five years, it needs to be changed.
"We're going there in a few weeks, it's horrible what happened today, we lost a member of the racing family.
"Seriously, we need to think about what to do with that corner as it's never fun going through there, every time we go through there we put our lives on the line.
"Today we saw something bad happen. It's not right."
The other awful death which Stroll referenced was during a Formula 2 race in 2019 when French driver Anthoine Hubert was killed in a multi-car pile-up and Juan Manuel Correa sustained life-changing injuries.
Alpine driver Pierre Gasly commented on the circuit, saying:
"We should never be in such positions of losing young talent.
"It’s not the first time, and it shouldn’t have taken place."
Nyck de Vries, who recently lost his seat on the AlphaTauri team, also spoke out on the safety concerns. He explained:
“It still shows there is serious danger [in motorsport], and concerning the track and the situation, maybe we have to consider twice and look at what can be done to avoid any serious incident going forward.”
