Former Formula 1 driver and Lewis Hamilton teammate Nico Rosberg confirmed that he won't be returning to the sport as a replacement for the seven-time world champion. Both Mercedes drivers were known to engage in intense teammate rivalries during the period when Mercedes emerged as the dominant force in the sport from 2014.

Key Takeaways:

  • Nico Rosberg, former F1 driver and ex-teammate of Lewis Hamilton, confirms he will not return to Formula 1 as a replacement for Hamilton at Mercedes.
  • Hamilton's move to Ferrari in 2025 has sparked speculation about his replacement, with Rosberg's name being mentioned.
  • Rosberg, who retired after winning the 2016 championship, expresses understanding of Hamilton's decision to fulfill a personal dream of racing for Ferrari, and Mercedes takes its time in finding a suitable replacement for the upcoming season.

Hamilton made a shocking announcement early this month of leaving Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025. As the Brackley outfit looks for a suitable replacement, the name of arch-rival Rosberg appeared several times.

Rosberg announced his retirement from the sport shortly after winning the 2016 championship title. Both Mercedes drivers offered fans some spectacularly close racing scenes between 2014 and 2016.

Appearing as a highly competitive driver, if Mercedes were contemplating asking Rosberg whether he had any interest in making a final return to the sport, it seems futile, as the retired driver has already expressed his intention not to return to Formula 1.

Confirming the decision, Rosberg told Süddeutsche Zeitung:

“That’s over, I’m not planning a comeback.

“I would have to prepare intensively for a whole year, if only to train the synapses in my brain.”

Mercedes admitted that it won't be making haste in looking for the right replacement since it has an entire season ahead of it. However, it is speculated that Hamilton switched to the Maranello outfit on performance grounds, as he spent two winless seasons in the sport since the inception of the ground effect era in 2022. Not to forget his revelation of his childhood dream of racing for Ferrari.

Rosberg understands where Hamilton comes from, as racing for two legendary teams like Mercedes and Ferrari would be on every driver's list. He added:

“It surprised me.

“But if you look at the big picture: There are two legendary teams that everyone wants to drive for – Ferrari and Mercedes.

“I can understand that he is fulfilling a personal dream.”
