Fernando Alonso has revealed what his career goal will be when he eventually decides to retire from Formula One.

There has been a huge amount of speculation about the Aston Martin driver’s potential retirement. However, despite having his F1 debut back in 2001 and being the oldest driver on the grid at 42, he is not showing signs of stopping anytime soon.

Speaking to GQ Spain ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the two-time champion discusses what life may be like after he decides to retire from F1. He explained:

“When I retire from Formula 1, I would love to return to the Dakar.

“Trying to win the Dakar Rally is a clear goal in my career.

“It would complete me, make me happy and I think it would leave an almost unprecedented legacy.

"Winning in Formula 1, Endurance and rallying would complete the perfect circle of a racing driver.”

The Spanish driver is no stranger to exploring other racing categories. On top of the two Formula One championships to his name, he had also won the World Endurance Championship and the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Alonso has actually already competed in the Dakar Rally in 2020 when he finished in 13th position. He has also taken part in IndyCar where his best finish was 21st.

Aston Martin’s surprising performance at the start of the 2023 season has seemed to rejuvenate Alonso with the possibility of his 33rd career win on the cards. Despite the Silverstone-based team’s unfortunate down-turn in performance, Alonso remains committed to continuing his incredible streak in the sport.
