F1 News: Fernando Alonso Urges Formula One To Consider Huge Qualifying Rule Change
Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso has revealed that Formula One should consider a rule change in qualifying and make it a 'single lap' event to prevent congestion. The Spaniard is currently against the existing format that drivers of several teams have been taking undue advantage of.
The behavior of certain F1 drivers in the last few races which includes impeding, has not only been a hindrance in terms of other drivers being unable to perform their runs properly but, it has also become a safety issue. Measures put into place by the governing body to stop the cars from ganging up in the final sector of the lap seemed to have failed in Italy and Singapore.

Revealing his idea, Alonso told Autosport that a single-lap qualifying should be considered to stop the menace because no other method will stop the drivers from finding a loophole. He said:
“They have a very difficult job in terms of managing traffic on street circuits and all the other things like that.
"As I have said several times, there is only one way to find a solution, and that is qualification in one round. Every other solution we can try will never work, because we will always find a way around them.”
The existing qualifying format in F1 has been in use since 2006. An attempt was made in 2016 to alter it by bringing in an elimination-style format but, that was done away with after just one race.
Alonso's single-lap qualifying proposal was first implemented in 2003, whereby a car is sent individually with a single chance to set the best time. He added:
“I think this qualifying format [existing format] is outdated.
"It's been the same thing for 20 or 25 years and the cars are not the same as 20 or 25 years ago. We have hybrid engines, we have to load, unload, cool the tyres.
"So the only way to move forward is to do a single lap.”
