F1 News: George Russell Under Fire - "This Can't Go On"

George Russell has come under fire from fans following his crash during the Canadian Grand Prix.

George Russell has come under fire for his crash during the Canadian Grand Prix.

The British driver was running in fourth position when he crashed into the race wall after the chicane. Although it looked as though it was going to end his race there and then, Russell was able to crawl back to the pits to change the front nose and tyres and continue with the race. He was back in nineteenth as he rejoined and began to pick off places but he ultimately had to retire from the race due to excessive brake wear which is thought to be due to the crash.

Fans have been reacting to the moment with some taking aim at the Mercedes driver. One fan referred to Russell's recent comment that there are some drivers on the grid that he feels don't have good spatial awareness making him wary of overtaking them. The fan commented:

"Crashes since George Russell said drivers lack spacial awareness.

"Russell: 1 Grid: 0"

Plenty of others found the same irony in the situation. Another fan responded:

"Nice spatial awareness there, bud"

During 2022, Russell was branded as 'Mr. Consistency' for finishing in the top 5 for the majority of the races. However, he has not been able to continue with this into 2023. Another fan commented:

"Not the same George as last season, he's feeling pressured hence these silly mistakes. Needs to get his head sorted as this can't go on."

This was Russell's second retirement of the season. He now sits in sixth place in the drivers' championship with 65 points behind Carlos Sainz who has 68 points and ahead of Charles Leclerc with 54 points.
