F1 News: Jenson Button Unravels Lewis Hamilton's Retirement From Mercedes
Jenson Button, the notable 2009 Formula 1 World Champion, is confident that Lewis Hamilton, his former McLaren teammate, won't be hanging up his helmet anytime soon with Mercedes. This statement comes despite the speculation that Hamilton might call it quits if Mercedes, his current team, continues to underperform.
Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion himself, has a mere six months left on his contract with Mercedes, famously known as the Silver Arrows. Interestingly, there hasn't been any news of a contract extension yet. This situation has led to Hamilton's future becoming a hot topic. There's a buzz of curiosity about whether he'll leave Mercedes to aim for his eighth Drivers' Championship with another team.
However, the chances of Hamilton leaving seem pretty slim. Both he and Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team boss, have assured the press that a new agreement will be inked sometime this racing season. Reports suggest that Hamilton is on the brink of signing a multi-year extension with the Brackley-based team. If this happens, he'll likely remain in the sport until at least the end of 2025.
Hamilton's current predicament with Mercedes appears to leave him with limited options. Button points out that top teams like Red Bull, Ferrari, and Aston Martin don't have room for Hamilton for at least another year.
"Sure, Hamilton is loyal, but I don't think he's got other options that he would want," Button commented.
Button also suggested that Hamilton would not be a suitable fit for Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen. As for Ferrari and Aston Martin, Button quickly dismissed those options.
"I don’t think he’d be at Ferrari. Aston Martin? Definitely won't be going to Aston Martin – they’ve got two seats that are going to be filled there for a little while," he stated.
Button believes Hamilton's future will remain with Mercedes. He sees Hamilton as a loyal figure and appreciates him facing tough times with the team. Button is confident that they'll come out stronger together.
"It's a rollercoaster in Formula 1, especially when you've been on top for that long, there’s going to be a dip. But if you can stay with that team, they will rise to the top again – he’s not going to retire," Button firmly declared.
