The Las Vegas GP organisers prioritised safety and logistical concerns in their decision to close fan zones before FP2, leaving fans disappointed but ensuring overall security.

The F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix organisers have issued a statement following the unexpected closure of fan zones before the second free practice session (FP2). The decision, driven by safety concerns and logistical issues, left numerous fans disappointed and seeking explanations.

Key Takeaways:

  • Safety First: Organisers prioritised safety following an incident involving a water valve cover. This led to extensive safety checks and a significant delay in the race schedule.
  • Logistical Challenges: Due to the delay, concerns arose about safely moving fans and employees out of the circuit, leading to the closure of fan zones.
  • Union Rules and Timing: Strict union rules and the late hour of FP2's completion at 04:00 local time influenced the decision to send fans home for their safety and well-being.

The F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix has been at the centre of an unforeseen situation that saw fans being sent home before the commencement of the second free practice session (FP2). This move by the organisers was a response to a critical safety issue and was articulated in a statement released on their official channel.

"There is no higher priority at a Formula 1 race than the safety and security of drivers, fans and staff alike," the statement began, addressing the gravity of the situation. The incident in question involved a water valve cover, prompting the Las Vegas Grand Prix, FI, and the FIA to implement additional safety measures. These measures, unfortunately, required several hours to complete, disrupting the race schedule significantly.

"Given the lateness of the hour and logistical concerns regarding the safe movement of fans and employees out of the circuit, LVGP made the difficult decision to close the fan zones prior to the beginning of Free Practice 2," the statement continued.

Further complicating the situation were the strict rules set by unions, requiring all staff to be present when fans are on the track. With FP2 not concluding until 04:00 local time, the decision to send fans home was deemed necessary. The organisers, however, assured that with a complete round of practice successfully finished, they are committed to providing a safe and entertaining race weekend.
