Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton praised the potential for a shared race weekend between Formula 1 and MotoGP. The idea, spurred by Liberty Media's new ownership ties with both motorsports, was termed "epic" by the seven-time champion.

Key Takeaways:

  • Lewis Hamilton, speaking at the Japanese Grand Prix, expressed strong support for the idea of joint Formula 1 and MotoGP race weekends, following Liberty Media's acquisition of a major stake in MotoGP's parent company, Dorna Sports.
  • Hamilton described the potential for such combined events as "epic" and playfully mused about competing in both motorsport disciplines over a single weekend, though he acknowledged the impracticality of this idea.
  • Despite challenges, such as the suitability of venues and the logistical complexities involved, the idea has generated significant interest, with discussions indicating that tracks like the Circuit of the Americas could potentially host these crossover events.

Hamilton shared his thoughts during an interview with Autosport at the Japanese Grand Prix, following Liberty Media's acquisition of a majority stake in MotoGP. He commented:

“I think Liberty has done an amazing job with Formula 1, obviously the value of the thing [rising since 2017]. So, I think they can do a great job with MotoGP.

“It's exciting because I love MotoGP. It would be epic if we can have them on the same weekend.”

Hamilton even entertained the notion, albeit jokingly, of competing in both racing disciplines over a single weekend. He added:

“Maybe I could do a race in MotoGP and race a Formula 1 car on the same weekend – that would be really cool."

Venues like the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, which already hosts both sports, could potentially serve as viable locations for this in the future, whereas newer F1 street circuits may pose challenges. Although this seems like a far-off possibility at the moment, it doesn't seem completely out of the question.
