Lewis Hamilton, amidst the tumult of recent seasons, has opened up about his retirement considerations, comparing his staying in F1 to a gambler staying in a casino too long.

Key Takeaways:

  • Post-2021 Reflections: The dramatic 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Hamilton narrowly lost the championship to Max Verstappen, significantly impacted his thoughts on retirement.
  • Controversial Season Finale: The intense battle and subsequent loss to Verstappen was a source of great disappointment for Mercedes, contrasting sharply with the jubilation at Red Bull Racing.
  • Careful Decision-Making: Hamilton emphasised the importance of not making hasty decisions based on emotions, taking time to reflect before deciding to continue racing.

Lewis Hamilton, a name synonymous with Formula 1 dominance, is at a critical juncture in his career. Recently, talking with Bild, he expressed uncertainty about his retirement, likening his career to that of a gambler:

"I don’t know… And I don’t like planning the ending. I don't know when that will be yet.

"Gamblers often stay in the casino even when they win and then stay too long. You have to leave when you're at the top. But I haven't decided yet if it's something I'm going to do. I want to get back to the top first. But that could take time.”

Hamilton's reflections are not just rooted in his recent performances but also in the emotional aftermath of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This event was a turning point, as Hamilton admitted to Autosport.com that retirement had crossed his mind following the dramatic conclusion of the race.

"For sure, yeah," he admitted. "There was so much going through my mind during that period in time.

"But I think one of the worst things you can do is make decisions based on emotions, because when you are emotional and in the heat of that moment, more often than not, you’re not going to make the best decisions."

In the 2022 season, marked by sweeping aerodynamic regulation changes, Hamilton experienced a shift in performance. His Mercedes W13 struggled with pace, resulting in his first winless season. However, the 2023 season saw improvement, with Hamilton finishing third in the drivers' standings, yet still without a victory since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Hamilton's journey through the 2023 season was marked by a mix of promising finishes and challenging races. His consistency in races like Hungary, Belgium, and Singapore was evident, but challenges like the disqualification in the United States and the DNF in Qatar highlighted the hurdles he continued to face.

Whether Hamilton decides to chase glory again or hang up his helmet, his legacy as one of the sport's greatest drivers remains undisputed. For now, the F1 world awaits his decision. But for now, with a two year contract with Mercedes, there's still life in the British driver yet.
