F1 fans have been left confused over the latest rumour of Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes contract extension which is said to be confirmed by the team and driver before the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend.

Lewis Hamilton is reportedly close to signing a new contract with Mercedes, with a one-year extension and the possibility of a second year based on performance. However, there are rumours that Hamilton has taken a pay cut, with his current contract value of $55 million per year expected to decrease.

This decrease is attributed to Mercedes' struggles in the 2022 season and their ongoing efforts to understand their new cars. Despite these challenges, Hamilton remains optimistic about his future with Mercedes and their ongoing battle with Aston Martin and Ferrari for the second-best car on the grid. The Spanish GP provided hope as Hamilton and George Russell showcased strong race pace and joined Max Verstappen on the podium.

Fans have been left confused over why the seven-time champion would take a pay cut in order to stay with the Brackley-based squad.

One fan posted that taking a pay cut doesn't make sense to them, they commented:

"Why would Lewis take a pay cut? It doesn’t make any sense imo" [sic]

Another fan highlighted that the British driver had previously said that he was focussed on agreeing a multi-year contract. They posted to Twitter:

"LEWIS HAMILTON U SAID U WANTED A MULTIYEAR CONTRACT U WANTED MORE THAN JUST ONE YEAR SO DON'T PLAY WITH ME SIR"

According to the reports, the contract extension will be confirmed by both the driver and the team before the Canadian Grand Prix.
