F1 News: Lewis Hamilton Reflects On Difficult But Successful Canadian Qualifying
Lewis Hamilton, the seasoned Formula 1 7-time world champion, outpaced his teammate George Russell during the qualifying session of the Canadian Grand Prix. Despite almost being eliminated during Q2, he managed to hold his own amidst changing conditions and bring the Mercedes W14 home on the second row.
In a post-qualifying conversation with Viaplay, Hamilton shared his feelings about the intense competition.
"Yeah, I'm definitely happy to be on the second row. I think it could have been way worse. So I know I nearly didn't get through into Q3, so I was right on the edge," he said.
Hamilton, who can boast of earning his first-ever pole position on this very Montreal circuit, unsurprisingly expressed his relief.
The British driver went on to recall his experience during the session:
"I would have definitely been gutted if I... because there was one lap I was up like 7 tenths or something like that and I locked up and went straight in the last corner. And after that I was just on the edge of... on the cusp of being knocked out in Q2."
Appreciative of his ability to turn things around, Hamilton expressed his gratitude for making it through.
"So I'm grateful I just got through and anything from there was a positive," he concluded.
With Hamilton starting from the second row at tomorrow's Grand Prix, fans of the sport will be excited to see where he can extract performance in a bid to take on the powerful Red Bull RB19s and their drivers, despite Sergio Perez starting P12 on the grid. Max Verstappen, as usual, in pole position.
