F1 News: Liam Lawson Receives Penalty During First Formula One Race
Liam Lawson faced a 10-second penalty during his F1 debut at the Dutch Grand Prix. Despite this setback, the AlphaTauri driver, transitioning from Super Formula, remains hopeful for a full-time seat in 2024.
Lawson's Debut Marred by Penalty
Liam Lawson's much-anticipated F1 debut at the Dutch Grand Prix was slightly tainted as he faced a 10-second time penalty. Replacing Daniel Ricciardo, who unfortunately faced an injury during FP2, Lawson had massive shoes to fill. Yet, his initial run did promise sparks as he showcased his potential. Amidst the opening laps, marked by a sudden heavy rain and consequent flurry of pitstops, Lawson found himself in a tight spot.
His alleged impediment of Kevin Magnussen in the pit-lane drew the race officials' attention, resulting in the penalty. Lawson found himself at the bottom of the grid.
Transitioning from Super Formula to F1
Lawson, a native New Zealander, was racing in the Super Formula just the previous weekend. Now, he was suddenly thrust into the F1 world - a challenging transition even for the most seasoned racers.
“Definitely is, and it’s a lot faster than what was already quite fast yesterday," he admitted. "Obviously it’s going to be a challenging day, especially the first part of the race. I’m excited.
“Very briefly. I told them [family] I’d be driving and that was literally the last message I sent. I’ve just been focused on that.
!So, on Monday or tomorrow, I’ll catch up with them and everybody. It’s been a lot to go through in the last few days."
The Road Ahead for Lawson
Despite the early setback, Lawson's eyes are set on his racing future. With aspirations of impressing Helmut Marko, the chief of Red Bull's young driver programme, and the entire AlphaTauri unit, he hopes to cement a permanent spot for 2024. Given his evident talent and dedication, the F1 community awaits news of his future.
