F1 News: Max Verstappen Compared To Ayrton Senna - "Will Break All Existing Records"
This season has seen the formidable Max Verstappen easily take the reins in the world championship as he and his RB19 seemingly look unbeatable. The Dutch Red Bull driver has successfully established a lead of 39 points over his teammate Sergio Perez after only six races, and Red Bull as a constructor holds a 129-point lead over Aston Martin, who sits in second. Now, former F1 driver Gerhard Berger, is confident that the championship leader will "break all existing records" in the sport.
Quoting Berger's conversation with Kronen Zeitung, he said:
"I trust Verstappen to break all existing records in Formula 1, including Hamilton's 103 wins. He said today that it is not important for him, but that will change."
It's fair to say that Verstappen and his machinery are a strong force on the track, with the Adrian Newey-designed RB19 proving to be a contender that is simply too much for other teams to compete with. And with Max sat with such a lead over teammate Perez, Berger compares their rivalry to that of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.
"I read recently that Verstappen and Perez is a repeat of Ayrton Senna against Alain Prost," Berger noted, thereby placing Verstappen in the esteemed league of these legendary racers.
"Yes, Verstappen is in that league and Perez is doing his best to stay close to the Dutchman. Still, to me it looks like Verstappen is going for it on his own."
This bold assertion from Berger will certainly generate conversation from fans with Verstappen being a divisive character of the grid. But looking at his performance, it's no argument that he has a very good change of doing exactly what Verger is alluding to. The question is, how long can Red Bull fight of the competition, and will another team, likely Aston Martin, be able to catch up before it's a done deal?
