It's been confirmed that McLaren is fighting against Lando Norris being punished for 'unsportsmanlike behaviour' during the Canadian Grand Prix. This comes after the team logged a 'right of review' this weekend in Austria. And alongside them, Williams will be joining them as a 'concerned party'.

Norris was penalised for falling too far behind Oscar Piastri, his teammate, under the Safety Car during the Canadian Grand Prix. This allowed McLaren to pull off a smooth double stack pit stop, saving them precious time. But the stewards didn't see it the same way. They thought Norris slowed down too much so the team could perform the quick double stop.

“In Canada, we were surprised by the penalty and uncertain as to the rationale behind the decision,” McLaren released in a statement. “We spoke to the Stewards immediately after the race to help understand the reasoning for the penalty.

“Given this provision [of right of review], the team took the initial explanation onboard and decided to review the case in a calm and considered manner, performing comprehensive due diligence, which included looking at the precedents.

"After this careful and extensive review, we believe enough evidence exists to a submit a “right to review” to the FIA, which we have done so.

“We will now continue to work with the FIA closely, in the same constructive and collaborative manner in which we normally do, and will accept the outcome of their deliberations and decision.”

Norris lost four places at the finish line after the 5-second penalty was applied and even fell out of the points. Given the potential impact on the Constructors' Championship and the fact that McLaren wasn't on board with the penalty, they decided to appeal in Austria.

They feel they now have enough evidence to submit a "right of review" to the FIA, and that's exactly what they've done.

The McLaren team now plans to continue working closely with the FIA.

The hearing will go ahead at 9.30am local time [8.30am BST] on Sunday 2 July.
