The Mercedes F1 team has commented on the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix being cancelled this weekend due to the severe flooding in the area.

The Brackley-based squad, who were due to bring significant upgrades to the W14 this weekend, has posted to the fans writing that the safety of the local residents "must take priority".

The team posted:

"The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team fully supports the decision by Formula 1, the FIA, the race promoters and local authorities to not proceed with the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend.

"The safety of people in the Emilia Romagna region must take priority, alongside allowing local authorities and emergency services to continue their vital work helping those in need.

"Our thoughts are with the victims, families and communities who have been affected by the flooding in the region."

Red weather warning were released on Monday of rain, thunderstorms, and severe winds for the week ahead. This was followed by personnel working in the F1 paddock being told to evacuate on Tuesday and instructed to not return until further notice.

A statement was released by Formula One earlier today confirming that the race will not be going ahead this weekend, after a meeting with the FIA, race promoters, and local authorities.

It is currently unclear as to whether the event will be fully cancelled for the 2023 season or rescheduled for later in the year. However, it is hard to see when the event will be able to go ahead with the extremely busy calendar.

We are sure more announcements will be released as things progress.
