F1 News: Recent Study Reveals Racism Is Still A Prominent Issue In Sport
Racism remains a persistent problem in the world of F1 racing, as evidenced by a recent study conducted by The Female Drive and Areto Labs.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has been a prominent advocate for greater diversity and equality in the sport, but despite his and others efforts, instances of racist, sexist, and homophobic abuse have continued to surface both on and off the track.
The study, which was designed to shed light on the extent of the issue, analysed social media posts made between October and November and uncovered a disturbing number of racist comments.
Of the 5,500 racist comments identified, 5% were considered high-risk, meaning that they constituted a threat to individuals or groups and described an intention to cause harm, injury, or violence.
While the study did not release a comprehensive list of examples, it stated that over 1,000 comments used the N-word and similar language to insult people of colour, while others used terms such as "monkey" and "ape."
These findings paint a bleak picture of the current state of affairs in the world of F1 racing, and highlight the urgent need for further action to be taken to address this ongoing problem.
The full results of the study can be accessed by following the post below by The Female Drive on social media. However, readers should be aware that the content may contain language that could be triggering to some.
Nevertheless, it is important for the wider public to be made aware of these findings so that the issue can be properly addressed, and real progress can be made in creating a more inclusive and equal sporting community.
The Female Drive posted to social media:
"This week we are highlighting the racist abuse that is occurring online within the F1 community.
"We think the data and the post speak for themselves."
