F1 News: Red Bull Advisor Hits Out At Netflix's Drive To Survive - "Unrelated To Reality"
Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has acknowledged the impact that Netflix's Drive to Survive has had on F1, however, has slammed the show for being "unrelated to reality".
Marko confirms the increasing number of spectators being drawn to Formula 1, particularly in the United States. This surge in popularity owes much to the Netflix documentary series 'Drive to Survive.' However, Marko harbours reservations about the show's accuracy and realistic portrayal.
'Drive to Survive' has garnered both praise and criticism. Undoubtedly, it has had a significant positive impact on Formula 1, yet the documentary's creators often face reproach for deviating from reality. This aspect prompted Max Verstappen to decline participation in the series on multiple occasions last year, resulting in his absence from the show, although he has now returned to the show after talking his concerns through with the producers.
Speaking to German Motorsport-Magazin.com, Marko expresses his viewpoint on the subject. The 80-year-old Austrian presents a nuanced perspective, juggling two contrasting thoughts. He stated:
"Some may know the Netflix series, which has nothing to do with reality.
"It has provided a breakthrough for Formula 1 in the United States and as long as the ratings and interest are there, you can debate whether it is wise or necessary. But the interest is what prevails - and as long as people want it, why shouldn't they be presented with it?"
Undoubtedly, Red Bull also reaps the rewards of increased international attention. As more fans engage with Formula 1, companies become more inclined to invest in sponsorship, leading to lucrative deals. Especially with Daniel Ricciardo joining the team as the third driver for 2023. Ricciardo very quickly became a fan favourite on the show and brings with him a huge following. Nonetheless, Marko emphasises the importance of fans soon developing a deeper understanding of Formula 1, beyond the narratives that may not accurately reflect reality.
'Drive to Survive' has undeniably played a crucial role in boosting the popularity of Formula 1. However, Marko's reservations concerning the show's fidelity to reality underscore the need for fans to have a comprehensive understanding of the sport, untethered from potentially misleading storylines.
