F1 News: Sebastian Vettel Calls For Change In The Sport To Prevent Being "Banned"
Recently retired F1 driver Sebastian Vettel has spoken about what the F1 needs to change to prevent being "banned" in the future.
The four-time champion has explained that the sport needs to focus on becoming more environmentally friendly. Vettel has used his platform for a long time to advocate multiple environmental initiatives and fight for change.
The F1 is on its journey to become carbon neutral by 2030 and the German driver was part of encouraging the change in schedule to consider the location of the grand prix weekends to minimise the carbon footprint.
Speaking at the Race of Champions over the weekend in Sweden, where he was knocked out of the running by fellow German driver and godson Mick Schumacher, Vettel spoke about the future of F1. He explained:
“We have young drivers, and I have children, and I think it’s really a privilege to experience the world of motorsports as I have.
“It would be a shame if this were one day banned for obvious reasons.”
The four-time champion continued:
“I think that for the future, if we want to continue practicing this sport and cultivate our passion for racing, we have to think of alternatives.
“Or we can continue to do things as we are used to for another couple of years before we end up with a really big problem.
“So it’s good to see that people are caring about that. Of course it depends on the type of racing, but the movement exists, people are considering how to create a sustainable future.”
Vettel retired at the end of the 2022 season and has not announced what he will be doing next, however, the F1 world continues to hope to see him back in some capacity soon.
The 2023 season begins with the Bahrain Grand Prix on 3-5 March and the next important F1 date is Friday 3 February for the Red Bull RB19 launch.
