As Red Bull driver Sergio Perez nears the final year of his current contract with the team, Formula E chief and co-founder Alberto Longo has extended an invitation for the Mexican driver to join the world of Formula E.

The offer to join the series comes at a time when the 2024 Formula 1 season hasn't even begun. Fortunately for Perez, he has a backup to rely on, in case things go downhill like last year.

Perez had a strong start in 2023, securing victories in two Grand Prix races early in the season. However, when Max Verstappen gave it the beans in his RB19 F1 car, he concluded the season with over half the points of his teammate.

Several lapses during the year, such as the series of silly errors during the Japanese Grand Prix, significantly tarnished Perez's image as an F1 driver. Speculation even arose that he might face mid-season dismissal from Red Bull.

Though nothing drastic took place, he now has a last chance to prove to Red Bull that he is a competitive racing driver who can compete against Verstappen to secure a contract extension with the Milton Keynes outfit.

If not, Red Bull will be considering a replacement for the 2025 season. Several reports state that AlphaTauri driver Daniel Ricciardo could have his second chance with Red Bull, but that is yet to be ascertained.

While Perez hasn't revealed his plans for 2025, Longo is eager to have him in Formula E, which he thinks is the 33-year-old driver's "home". Keeping the doors open for Perez, Longo told AS:

“I talk to Checo constantly and I hope he makes a leap to the real competition.

“Formula E is his home, the doors are open to him and he is welcome.”

Whether Perez displays similar enthusiasm about Formula E or not, remains to be seen. Currently, he has one last opportunity to prove himself to Red Bull in a record-breaking 24-race Formula 1 season.
