The FIA has initiated an investigation into Toto and Susie Wolff following complaints from F1 team principals about potential conflicts of interest. This move responds to worries about the Wolffs having access to confidential information that could advantage Mercedes.

Key Takeaways:

  • Complaints Trigger Investigation: F1 team principals have raised concerns about Toto and Susie Wolff, suggesting they might possess insider knowledge not available to others. Toto, as Mercedes' team principal and CEO, and Susie, managing director of the F1 Academy, are in positions where they could access sensitive information.
  • BusinessF1 Magazine Report: A report from BusinessF1 magazine indicated a specific incident where Toto Wolff allegedly used confidential information from FOM in a team principal meeting, sparking the current controversy.
  • FIA's Official Response: FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has engaged the FIA Compliance Department to scrutinise the matter, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations.

The FIA, has taken steps to address potential conflicts of interest involving Toto and Susie Wolff, according to a report from Autosport.

The issue escalated when it became apparent that the Wolffs might have access to confidential information not usually available to them. This raised concerns among other team principals about an unfair advantage being leveraged by Mercedes. The suspicions were further fuelled by a report in BusinessF1 magazine, which suggested that Toto Wolff used exclusive information from FOM (Formula One Management) in a team principal meeting.

The FIA, under the leadership of president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, took these allegations seriously. A statement released on Tuesday confirmed that the FIA Compliance Department is investigating these claims. The statement reads:

"The FIA is aware of media speculation centred on the allegation of information of a confidential nature being passed to an F1 team principal from a member of FOM personnel. The FIA Compliance Department is looking into the matter."

Susie Wolff's role is particularly under scrutiny. Appointed as managing director of the F1 Academy in March this year, she previously held significant positions in the Venturi Formula E squad and has been an influential figure in promoting female participation in motorsport. Her direct reporting line to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is a point of interest in this investigation.
