Toto Wolff, Mercedes' team principal, has taken a subtle jab at the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2021 and former F1 race director Michael Masi, amidst the team's challenges at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mercedes' Difficulties in Las Vegas: The team faced setbacks with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finishing lower than expected due to on-track incidents.
  • Wolff's Remarks on Abu Dhabi 2021: Wolff expressed his views on the Abu Dhabi 2021 race, implicitly criticizing the decisions made by ex-race director Michael Masi.
  • Ferrari Closing the Gap: Ferrari's performance in Las Vegas has narrowed their point deficit with Mercedes in the constructors' championship, adding pressure on Mercedes in the final race.

During the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Mercedes didn't perform as expected. Lewis Hamilton faced a puncture after a collision with Oscar Piastri's McLaren, and George Russell was penalised for causing a collision with Max Verstappen. Reflecting on these events and the overall season, Wolff admitted:

"That race summarises our season."

However, Wolff's most notable comments were regarding the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. He took a dig at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and former race director Michael Masi while commenting on the battle between his team and Ferrari.

"With a proper race director, so that should be fine," he joked, poking at the bear od 2021's most controversial race, subtly referencing the controversial decisions made during the season's final race, which significantly impacted Mercedes' championship aspirations.

As the F1 season heads to its conclusion in Abu Dhabi, the four-point gap between Mercedes and Ferrari in the constructors' championship sets the stage for a tense finale.

"It’s all down to the last weekend. They are very quick and done a good job.

"I think we could have been on par today. But the result shows something different.

"To be honest, it’s good to have P2 as a positive to finish the season, but P2, P3 for me there is little… it doesn’t make me particularly cheerful anyway."
