McLaren CEO Zak Brown conveys cautious optimism about competing in 2024, despite Red Bull's formidable presence.

McLaren team boss Zak Brown expressed cautious optimism about the team's prospects for the 2024 Formula 1 season. Acknowledging the dominance of Red Bull, Brown remains hopeful about McLaren's development for the upcoming 2024 season.

Key Takeaways:

  • Red Bull, having had one of their most dominant seasons, suspended development on their current car early, focusing on enhancing the RB20, leaving them in a strong position for 2024.
  • In contrast to Red Bull, McLaren has been continuously updating their car, which may have impacted their focus on the 2024 car. Despite this, Brown is positive about the advancements they've made for the upcoming season.
  • With less than three months until pre-season testing in Bahrain, McLaren is under pressure to prepare their car, aiming to be competitive and possibly contend for their first title in over a decade.

Zak Brown, McLaren's CEO, is facing the 2024 Formula 1 season with a mixture of confidence and realism. He acknowledges the formidable challenge posed by Red Bull, who strategically shifted their focus to developing the RB20 earlier, having the luxury to do so due to their dominant performance.

Meanwhile, McLaren's approach has been markedly different. The Woking-based squad has actively pursued improvements throughout the season, consistently introducing updates to their car. This relentless pursuit of performance enhancements, while commendable, might have influenced the amount of resources allocated to their 2024 car development.

Despite these challenges, Brown remains upbeat about McLaren's chances. In his conversation with Sky Sports F1, he mentioned:

"Well it's probably going to be Red Bull but I would not want to rule anybody else out. There’s a lot of great teams on the grid.

"We're feeling really good about our car for next year. [It's] hard to kind of know when Red Bull maybe stopped developing this year's car to get going on next year's.

"But we definitely feel like we will take a step forward but so will the entire grid and we’re just going to have to wait and see."

McLaren made significant improvements throughout the 2023 season with a troublesome start leading to multiple podium finishes as well as rookie Oscar Piastri winning his first Sprint Race. The huge jump in performance has left many predicting McLaren as a top championship contender for 2024.
