F1 Pundit Receives Hate Over Lewis Hamilton Comment
Sky Sports F1 pundit Naomi Schiff has come under fire from fans after her comments on Lewis Hamilton's slim possibility of an eighth championship title.
During an appearance on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Schiff explained that the British driver isn't in the position to fight for his eighth title whilst highlighting the fact he is now one of the older drivers on the grid. She said:
“For him I guess it was the moment that confirmed that really they [Mercedes] were still really much on the back foot and hadn’t made much or any progress in the winter period.
“That for them is probably what is so hard to digest at this point.
“Lewis obviously, and he mentioned it in the Sky Sports exclusive with Simon Lazenby and his lie detector test, is here for his eighth title. He’s waiting and going to stay for it.
“But for him to be in this position, is not putting him in any sort of position to get that eighth title.”
Schiff continued:
“I’m sure there’s a lot of pressure internally, from both drivers, but I guess even more so from Lewis because he’s not getting any younger.
“He’s obviously got Fernando [Alonso] to look up to in terms of how far you can go. But time is of the essence.
“They [Mercedes] spent an entire season struggling and being unhappy with where they were at with the car.
“So to have had this whole winter period and come back even a step backwards from where they were at the last race last season, that is what is so tough to accept. Especially when your customer team [Aston Martin] has managed to smash it.”
One fan wrote to social media, comparing Hamilton to Fernando Alonso who is the oldest driver on the grid. They seemed to miss Schiff's point of Mercedes struggling at the moment, whereas, Alonso is showing fantastic performance in the Aston Martin.
"Alonso is older and everybody is excited about his potential fight for the championship this year but when it comes to Lewis she suddenly has problems with his age. Hypocrite"
"Hope she has time left to become a decent human being!"
Another Twitter user blasted Schiff whilst missing the point that if Sky Sports only used F1 champions as commentators they would be very low in numbers.
"Says a woman with how many titles in F1? Another useless Sky pundit there purely to make up the numbers. All she's good at is taking the title for how many changes of wardrobe she can fit into one weekend"
Unfortunately, Schiff has come up against one of the strongest fan-bases for voicing her opinion on the current situation with Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. Other Twitter users came to her defence. One wrote:
"Naomi is really good. When she started i was afraid it might be difficult to stay objective since she already knew lewis. But from the start she brought great quality. And she got balls, not afraid of some backlash on a comment now and then. Great respect!"
Someone else hit back at another Twitter user, writing:
"She's a sports pundit? She doesn't have to blindly support Lewis, what is your logic?"
"She is free to say her opinion. Jeez you are acting like she said something horrible."
