Felipe Massa Taking Legal Action To Rip Lewis Hamilton Of World Champion Title
Former F1 driver Felipe Massa has intensified his investigations into the legality of the 2008 F1 World Championship results. Reports suggest that he is taking legal action, spurred on by comments from Bernie Ecclestone, the former F1 boss.
This move comes 15 years after Lewis Hamilton's first world championship win, with Massa looking to question the validity of the results. Massa has been blaming the 'crashgate' scandal that happened in 2008 for his loss to Hamilton in the championship.
The 'crashgate' scandal involved Nelson Piquet Jr crashing deliberately during the 2008 Singapore GP to help his Renault teammate, Fernando Alonso, win the race. The incident also caused a tricky pit stop for Massa, the race leader at that time, who went on to finish outside the points. Meanwhile, Hamilton finished third, eventually winning the championship.
Details of the scandal only came to light recently so there had been no hope of challenging the results. However, Ecclestone recently admitted that he and Max Mosley, the former FIA President, knew about the incident and kept it a secret to "protect the sport." This statement has prompted Massa to confirm that he will be looking into the matter and assessing his legal options.
According to reports, Massa has already found a team of lawyers who will be looking into this. Despite this, he's yet to make any public statements on the subject, unlike Piquet who has admitted that he was "treated like a dog" by Renault at the time.
