During his post-race interview with F1 champion Nico Rosberg, the Aston Martin driver explained:
"Yeah, first of all, I think congrats to Lance, my teammate, had a surgery days ago and now he's fighting right with everybody. Amazing for the team. He was great.
"This is just amazing. You know what Aston Martin did over the winter to have the second best car on race one this is just unreal.
When Rosberg asked how it felt to pass Ferrari and Mercedes, Alonso responded:
"I would love to start in front of them and then use the pace. We have to pass on track. It felt like they're more exciting, more adrenaline for sure."
Alonso last had a podium finish at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix which was his first podium in seven years, so this is a huge moment for the Spanish driver.
