Guenther Steiner says Haas will take some time before making a decision on Mick Schumacher's F1 future, stressing that the final choice will be made independent of Ferrari.

Mick Schumacher's performances this year have generally been luke-warm, with points finishes in Britain and Austria being the highlights of his otherwise underwhelming season.

The first few races proved most difficult for the 23-year-old, with significant crashes in Jeddah, Monaco and Miami building pressure on Schumacher as he searched for his first points.

It remains unclear how far Ferrari will push for the German to continue, but early indications suggest Haas will call the shots, as Guenther Steiner told racer.com:

"No, we don't have to wait to see what Ferrari says. We never decide [on] the driver before the summer break, and we will not do so this year.

"Obviously, I will start to speak with Gene over the summer break, and then you know how we do it.

"You will ask again at the next race in Europe and then we will tell you some time in the end of September or October what we are doing.

"At the end of the day I don't know the real deal between Ferrari and Mick - and I don't need to know. If he decides to go somewhere else, I cannot change it. Only Gene and me are involved in that process."

Haas currently occupy 7th position in the standings, with Mick Schumacher's P6 in Spielberg playing an important part in that feat.

However, the team must be decide whether the #47's errors and general pace deficit to Magnussen are sufficient enough to warrant a change.

The transfer market has provided many surprises already, and the American outfit is competitive enough to attract midfield-calibre driver.

Haas's decision will also demonstrate Ferrari's enthusiasm about Schumacher, and whether the Scuderia is willing to help protect his future in F1.
