Lewis Hamilton Makes Huge Statement Against Bahrain Ahead Of Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton makes a stand.

Renowned 7-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has already made a significant political statement on the first day of the 2023 F1 season. Ready to drive the Mercedes W14 to its limit for the first qualifying session of the year, he's looking to have a good start to what he wants to be his 8th world championship.

But whether the car's fast or not, he's already turned heads by wearing a helmet with a rainbow design on the top of the head section. This comes after the FIA ruled against drivers expressing personal views, political or otherwise, which was quickly turned around after backlash.

As Hamilton was preparing for the practice session today, he emerged wearing a helmet adorned with a rainbow. This symbol is widely recognized as the flag for the LGBTQ+ community. Hamilton's action is particularly striking as Bahrain has been criticized for its negative stance towards homosexuality, which is considered a criminal offense in the country. Although homosexual activity is not a criminal offense in private, several laws are used to target homosexuals in Bahrain.

King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain recently emphasized the kingdom's opposition to homosexual practices, stating that they would not allow such practices to harm their system of values and traditions.

Despite this, Hamilton made his stance known after the FIA announced that drivers would be able to freely express their views. This came after last season's decision to ban drivers from making "political, religious, or personal statements." This was quickly withdrawn after complaints from both drivers and fans of the sport.

Hamilton has been wearing the same helmet in Bahrain since last season, drawing praise from fans. This time, supporters were equally thrilled, with one praising Hamilton's helmet as an expression of support for the LGBTQ+ community. Another supporter called it "everything," while another stated that Hamilton never misses a chance to make a statement.

Meanwhile, Hamilton received a boost after being granted a medical exemption to wear his nose studs. Last season, F1 authorities prohibited drivers from wearing jewelry, but no action will be taken against Hamilton for his nose piercings.

Hamilton is gearing up to take a potential pole position at Bahrain today.
