Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton finished second in the Australian Grand Prix this weekend gone, marking this the first podium finish for the struggling Mercedes team this season. However, Hamilton's post-race celebration was dampened when he couldn't find his team to share the moment with. Now, an insider in Mercedes has revealed why the team wasn't present as Hamilton celebrated his spectacular finish.

In released footage, Hamilton can be seen asking where his team was, leaving fans wondering why the driver couldn't locate his colleagues. Following this, when asked about the podium finish in an interview, Hamilton made a playful comment about not knowing what it meant to the Brackley-based squad as he hadn't seen them since.

Fortunately, a member of the Mercedes team has posted to Twitter, explaining why there was no one around at the end of the dramatic race.

"We were there in amongst the crowd," Jonathan Wilcox said, a self-procalimed engineer nerd for Mercedes. "With George’s car already in the garage his side of the garage were busy getting into stripping down his car already so that’s probably why there weren’t many of us." [sic].

Another rumoured reason was that the team were also securing equipment after fans broke onto the track at the end of the race. A number of Formula 3 teams were reportedly looted, so it's no surprise that the Mercedes team were wanting to keep their hands on their hardware and information.

Hopefully, this puts an end to the negative thoughts around the Brackley-based team, as their social media had come under fire from fans of the British driver who were quick to jump to conclusions when the team wasn't present at the podium celebrations.

With a long wait until the next race, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, fans of the team will be excited to see the unveiling of huge upgrades for the W14. Whether this will transform the car into a race-winning spectacle we don't know, but we're looking forward to seeing more teams battle for P1 as the season continues to unfold.
