Pierre Gasly is out of the Azerbaijan GP qualifying in Q1 after colliding with the tyre wall at Turn 3. The French driver has had a disastrous start to the weekend in Baku after his Alpine burst into flames during Free Practice 1 earlier today.

The Alpine team worked tirelessly between FP1 and qualifying to get Gasly's car ready to be able to compete in the session. However, it was over fairly quickly for the Frenchman.

Gasly's crash caused the second red flag of the session, after Nyck de Vries crashed at the same corner. Currently sitting in the elimination zone are Gasly's teammate Esteban Ocon, Yuki Tsunoda, and Carlos Sainz who hasn't been able to put a time on the board yet. At the bottom of the board will be Gasly and De Vries.

Alpine are now relying on Ocon to get into Q1 of the qualifying session.

The first day of the Azerbaijan race weekend has been extremely dramatic so far. It is also the first sprint race weekend of the season, which the format has changed for. Tomorrow will see Baku host the Sprint Shootout with the Sprint race in the afternoon.

The qualifying session that is currently ongoing will determine the grid line-up for the grand prix on Sunday.
