Sky F1 Pundit Johnny Herbert Reveals Details Behind His Shocking Sacking
In a surprising turn of events, ex-Formula 1 driver and popular Sky F1 pundit Johnny Herbert has spoken out for the first time about his sudden departure from the broadcaster ahead of the 2023 F1 season.
Herbert had been a regular on Sky F1 since the broadcaster started coverage of F1 in 2012, and his departure has come as a bit of a shock to many of his fans who had quickly grown to love his sincere and detailed journalism.
Herbert admitted that he thought he was "quite popular" on Sky F1, and has only now revealed the ins and outs of his departure:
"I didn’t decide to step away – I thought everything was going ahead!" Herbert revealed to The Mirror. "And then I got a call in December, I think it was, when I was told things were changing.
It wasn’t explained why or what was changing. There was a mention of social media stuff and that was about it, really. I don’t really know."
Admitting that he likely won't be seen presenting anything on TV this season, he has confirmed that he still has plenty of opportunities as the motorsport continues to grow:
"There are a lot of other opportunities but, in terms of seeing me on a TV screen, there’s probably nothing planned on that front,’ said the Briton.
“I was always aware – at Sky they do these subscriber checks where you’re given points out of 10 – and I’ve always known I was always quite popular on that side. It’s a shame, but I’m over it. Moving on.”
Despite the setback, Herbert is keeping busy and has already started a podcast with ex-British F4 driver Billy Monger who currently works on Channel 4's F1 coverage.
"BUZZING to share with you my new podcast @liftthelidpod alongside the LEGEND @johnnyherbertf1," the young racing driver posted to social media. "Chatting all things @f1 around the new season."
As fans eagerly await news of Herbert's next move, we look forward to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after this short break in the F1 calendar.
