It has been reported that Yuki Tsunoda is set to sign a contract extension with AlphaTauri.

The Japanese driver's current contract with the Italian team is due to expire at the end of the season and it is no surprise that the team is keen to keep hold of him for next year.

Tsunoda has put in some great performances so far this season, but unfortunately, he does not have the points to show for it after narrowly missing out on the points on several occasions. He is currently sitting in seventeenth position in the drivers' standings with three points.

He went into the 2023 season as the unofficial lead driver of the team after Pierre Gasly moved to Alpine at the end of 2022, which was a role he seemed to thrive in. His new rookie teammate Nyck de Vries was abruptly dropped from the team after just ten races, so it wouldn't be surprising if the team wanted to keep some consistency for next year.

Tsunoda has spent his whole Formula One career in the Red Bull family so far. He joined the Red Bull Junior Team in 2019 before entering his F1 rookie season in 2021.

It is not clear how long the contract extension will be for, especially after the news of Honda joining forces with Aston Martin in 2026. Tsunoda has strong ties to Honda so it is widely thought that the driver could move to the British team to line up with the new engine collaboration.

Taking to social media, F1 Journalist from Motorsport.com, Kemal Sengul, posted that although there hasn't been an official contract extension yet, word from the team confirms that Tsunoda will stay in the team. He posted:

"It looks like Red Bull management will keep Yuki Tsunoda in AlphaTauri for 2024 after her good performance this year.

"The official contract has not been signed yet, but the first information is that he will remain in the team." [Translated by Twitter]
