Macy Young, the 2021 champion from Wittmann, Ariz., once again proved her mettle at the 2024 Bob Feist Invitational (BFI) Charlie 1 Horse All-Girl Breakaway held at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Okla., on Wednesday, April 3. Despite facing stiff competition from nearly 200 contenders, Young emerged victorious, claiming the top spot with her impressive performance.

Young's times of 3.48, 3.45, and 3.7 seconds earned her second place in both the first and second rounds and the top spot in the average, resulting in a total prize money of $17,500. Her dominance was evident as she outperformed her competitors, with the second-best roper trailing by 2.42 seconds in the average. Young also finished sixth in the average on her second entry, earning another $3,500.

In an interview with Dru Stew from the Equinety SportsDesk powered by Roping.com, Young shared her experience of the event:

"It’s a big arena, and it’s normally a longer score, but I've never seen this fast of calves at the BFI ever. The score felt a little longer than it normally was, but man, it was easy to get beat right there, and you were running down through there."

Despite the challenging setup and lightning-fast calves, Young and her trusted half-running-bred horse, Boomer, rose to the occasion.

Boomer, a 10-year-old bay gelding registered as Mister Judge Boomer (Bullseye Bullion x Bridle Bit Jewel x Judge Cash), played a pivotal role in their success. Bred and raised by Young, Boomer was originally trained as a barrel horse but transitioned seamlessly to breakaway roping at the age of five.

Together, Young and Boomer proved to be an unstoppable force in the world of rodeo.

"He’s so fast. He gives me a good shot every single time," said Young.

Young's consistent performance has helped her secure the seventh rank in the ProRodeo World Standings, with $30,562.39 in season earnings from seven rodeos.
