Super Teams, Super Roping, Super Payouts, Super Tuesday Style

Most people know Super Tuesday as the day most states hold their presidential primary elections, but in Odessa, Texas, Super Tuesday is the Tuesday during the Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo when the team ropers show up and show out.

What Events Took Place?

The Sandhills Stockshow and Rodeo hosted the 32nd Annual Sandhills Invitational Team and Match Roping and the 28th Annual Pro-Am Roping on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, Texas.

Super Tuesday draws in top ropers from all over the United States, most of whom are also competing in the PRCA rodeo taking place in Odessa, Texas, at the same time. Super Tuesday doesn’t just draw in top ropers; it also attracts plenty of fans.

In an interview with the Cowboy Channel, Coleman Proctor talked about Super Tuesday, "It's a great event.  They have a big team roping here.  [The ropings] start off in the morning and have a huge purse.  This is really a big deal for team ropers coming off the holiday season. The whole deal is fun, and every single year, it is a sell-out crowd."

The long rounds were held during the day. The Short-Rounds and All-Star Team Roping Match took place at 6:30 pm, and just as in years past, it was a packed event without an empty seat in the house.

Who Took Home The Titles?

In the All-Star Team Roping Match, it was Clay Tryan and Jake Long who took home the honors and the $5,000 prize money. The final match came down to Tryan and Long versus the newly crowned 2024 World Champions, Tyler Wade and Wesley Thorp. Clay Tryan is said to be retired, but given his always stellar performance in the arena, he might should reconsider.

Every year, team roping pairs decide to change partners for various reasons, and for a newly paired team to secure a win early in the year certainly sets the tone for a great year. The Open Roping provided that exact scenario when Cody Snow and Hunter Koch won the championship along with a payday of $15,500 for their efforts.

Wade and Thorp do not seem to be slowing down following their success at the NFR, as they finished second in the open division to pocket $12,700.

For the ProAm Headers, the top honors went to Glover Coats of Bronte, Texas, who teamed up with pro and 14-time NFR qualifier Travis Graves. Coats pocketed $2,100 and a beautiful new saddle for her efforts.

Conner Wright of Hobbs, N.M., with pro and six-time NFR qualifier Dustin Egusquiza, bested the field in the ProAm Heelers. Wright took home $2,350 and a beautiful new trophy saddle.
