Manchester United's famous no.7 jersey has a star-studded past.

George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham all wore seven on their back during their time at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the biggest superstar ever to occupy United's no.7 shirt though. He won the first of his five Ballon d'Or awards in 2008 while decked out in it.

After winning the Ballon d'Or four more times during an illustrious stint at Real Madrid, Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford in 2021 following a 12-year absence.

Ronaldo's second spell in Manchester was less successful than his first and he left for good in November last year, before signing with Al Nassr little over a month later.

Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Alexis Sanchez and Edinson Cavani all tried on United's no.7 jersey in between Ronaldo's two spells at the club.

But no player has worn no.7 for United's first team since Ronaldo's second exit.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, club bosses are now considering offering the squad number to 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho.

Madrid-born Argentina international Garnacho is currently no.49 on the United squad list.

But it is felt that 2023/24 could be the season he really makes his mark in the Premier League.

Giving him Ronaldo's old number would certainly be one way of United showing Garnacho how much faith they have in him.
