Ange Postecoglou Compares Son Heung-Min To Cristiano Ronaldo As Spurs Boss Explains Why South Korea Star In Thriving In New Position
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou cautiously compared Son Heung-min to Cristiano Ronaldo this week.
Postecoglou did so when explaining why Son has shone in a new position this season.
Son, 31, has spent the majority of his Tottenham career playing as a wide forward from the left wing.
However, following the sale of England no.9 Harry Kane this summer, Son has played predominantly as a central striker.
Ronaldo - who is the all-time leading scorer in soccer history - made a similar positional switch midway through his career, having started out as a winger before developing into an elite center-forward.
Postecoglou told Sky Sports: "I don't want to make a similar comparison, but you had him at Manchester United, Cristiano.
"He started off as a winger. But I always felt with Sonny, he's such a great finisher, his movement is outstanding and I think he's clever enough to play in that central area.
"I always like his work ethic, you see his press and that's what initiates the press from a defensive point of view and I knew he had that in him. It's an idea I had in my mind and it worked out."
Postecoglou was speaking on Friday before Tottenham's Premier League game away at Crystal Palace.
Spurs won that game 2-1 to move five points clear at the top of the table.
South Korea captain Son scored in the win at Selhurst Park, taking his tally of EPL goals to eight in 10 games this season.
