Antonio Rudiger's Little Piece Of UCL History Sees Real Madrid Deny Shakhtar Donetsk Memorable Win
Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Real Madrid
Shakhtar Donetsk were 29 seconds from recording a memorable win over Real Madrid in Warsaw, Poland.
The Ukrainian side had led since the first minute of the second half when Oleksandr Zubkov met a Bogdan Mykhaylichenko cross with an acrobatic volley to score from 19 yards.
Real were getting desperate. Carlo Ancelotti's final throw of the dice was to send center-back Antonio Rudiger up front as an emergency striker.
That move paid off in the fifth minute of added time when Rudiger bravely attacked a Toni Kroos cross and got to the ball just before the fist of Shakhtar keeper Anatolii Trubin.
The goal earned Real a 1-1 draw to see them qualify for the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.
Real are now unbeaten in 17 games in all competitions.
Rudiger's header also made a little bit of history. The goal was Real Madrid's first in the Champions League to be both scored and assisted by a German player.
