Everton right-back Ashley Young became the 23rd player in Premier League history to receive a red card in a Merseyside derby when he was sent off 37 minutes into Saturday's game against Liverpool.

Young picked up two yellow cards - both for fouls on Luis Diaz - before being given his marching orders by referee Craig Pawson.

The 38-year-old only committed two fouls - one fewer than Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas in the opening 45 minutes.

Tsimikas did not receive a booking for any of his three first-half fouls.

Young, who was the oldest player involved in Saturday's match at Anfield, has now been sent off five times during his career.

Meanwhile, 16 of the 23 red cards shown during Merseyside derbies in the EPL have been issued to Everton players.

Saturday's game - the 63rd Premier League meeting between Liverpool and Everton - was tied at 0-0 when Young left the field.

Liverpool went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to two goals from Mo Salah, including one from a penalty kick awarded following a VAR review.
