Barcelona On Brink Of UCL Elimination Despite Robert Lewandowski's Late Double Against Inter Milan
Barcelona 3-3 Inter Milan
Barcelona's Champions League destiny is no longer in their own hands after failing to beat Inter Milan at the Camp Nou.
A loss to Inter on Wednesday would have confirmed Barca's elimination but Robert Lewandowski salvaged a 3-3 draw with a 92nd-minute equalizer.
Lewandowski had hit another leveler 10 minutes earlier to make it 2-2 before Robin Gosens restored Inter's lead.
Things had been looking good for Barca when they went into half-time 1-0 up thanks to Ousmane Dembele's third goal of the season.
But Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez turned the game in Inter's favor early in the second half, before the late flurry of goals.
A draw kept Barca in the Champions League for now but Inter need only to win either of their final two group matches to make it impossible for Xavi's side to catch them.
Barca's elimination will be confirmed on October 26 if Inter beat Viktoria Plzen at the San Siro.
Plzen have lost their first four group games, conceding 16 goals in the process.
Exiting the Champions League in the group stage would be damaging for Barcelona off the pitch as well as on it.
Barcelona's financial position is famously far from rock-solid and, according to the Daily Mail's Spanish soccer expert Pete Jenson, the club had budgeted for reaching the UCL quarter-finals at the very least.
