Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga for a record-extending 11th year in a row after leapfrogging rivals Borussia Dortmund on the final day of the 2022/23 season.

Dortmund began Saturday's final round of fixtures two points ahead of Bayern.

But Edin Terzic's side could only draw 2-2 at home to Mainz, while Bayern won 2-1 away at Cologne.

Those results saw Bayern win the league with 71 points - the lowest title-winning tally since the 2009/10 season.

Dortmund also finished on 71 points but with an inferior goal difference of 39, compared to Bayern's 54.

Bayern moved top of the table eight minutes into Saturday's action when Kingsley Coman curled in a brilliant shot from the corner of the 18-yard box.

Dortmund then fell behind 15 minutes into their game when Andreas Hanche-Olsen gave Mainz a shock lead.

Sebastian Haller had a golden chance to draw Dortmund level almost immediately but he was denied from a penalty kick by Mainz keeper Finn Dahmen.

Mainz then went 2-0 up when Karim Onisiwo found the net on 24 minutes.

Over in Cologne, Bayern thought that they had also taken a 2-0 lead when Leroy Sane fired home on the stroke of half-time, but the goal was disallowed for handball following a VAR review.

Raphael Guerreiro gave Dortmund fans hope with a fine right-footed strike in the 69th minute.

That hope turned into belief when Dejan Ljubicic converted a penalty kick to draw Cologne level against Bayern.

Dortmund were now leading the live table for the first time since the eighth minute.

But Bayern were not done yet.

Substitute Jamal Musiala collected the ball just outside of the Cologne penalty area before spinning and aiming a low shot into the corner of the net in the 89th minute.

Back in Dortmund there was one last moment of drama as Niklas Sule equalized in the 97th minute but it proved to be too little, too late.
