Ben Foster Re-Retires From Soccer Days After Conceding Five Goals In His Final Game For Wrexham
Ben Foster has retired from soccer for a second time.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper originally quit the sport in September 2022, shortly after rejecting an offer to join Newcastle United.
But he was convinced to return to the game in March when he signed for Wrexham AFC.
After helping Wrexham win promotion to EFL League Two last season, Foster was persuaded by club co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhanney to sign a new 12-month contract in June.
But just 10 weeks after signing that deal, Foster decided to hang up his gloves for good after being unhappy with his recent performances.
The final game of Foster's career was a 5-5 draw with Swindon on Saturday. This was the second time he had conceded five goals in a match this season, after Wrexham lost 5-3 to MK Dons earlier this month.
In a club statement on Monday, Foster said: "The honest truth is that my performances this season haven't reached the level I demand of myself and I feel that now is the right time to retire.
"At the forefront of my mind when making this decision, was not only what was best for me but also the club, and making the decision now gives the club every opportunity to assess their options before the window closes.
"Wrexham will always have a special place in my heart."
Foster had first played for Wrexham in 2005 after joining on loan from Stoke City.
He also represented Manchester United, Watford, Birmingham, West Brom and England during a career that saw him make 390 Premier League appearances and earn eight senior international caps.
