Benjamin Mendy is officially no longer a Manchester City player.

The 28-year-old was released by the club after his contract expired at midnight on Friday.

City did not make a statement regarding Mendy's departure.

Mendy played in 75 first-team games during his City career following a £52 million transfer from Monaco in July 2017.

His most recent City appearance came in August 2021 during a 1-0 loss to Tottenham.

Mendy was charged by Cheshire Police later that month with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

After more complainants came forward, Mendy eventually stood trial last year, charged with eight counts of rape, one of attempted rape and one of sexual assault. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

In September, Mendy was found not guilty of one count of rape. Then in January 2023, he was found not guilty of six other counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The jury could not reach a verdict on one other count of rape and one count of attempted rape.

Mendy's retrial on those two outstanding charges began earlier this week.
