Manchester United claimed the final place in the EFL Cup fourth round on Thursday night by coming from behind to beat Aston Villa.

United had lost 3-1 at Villa in the Premier League four days earlier and they looked like they might get a repeat dose at Old Trafford when they went 1-0 and then 2-1 down in a dramatic second half.

But Bruno Fernandes inspired an excellent comeback to help the Red Devils win 4-2 in front of 75,000 fans.

After a sleepy first half, the game exploded into life at the start of the second period.

Ollie Watkins fired Villa in front in the 48th minute but Fernandes set up Anthony Martial to equalize just 19 seconds after the restart.

A Diogo Dalot own goal restored Villa's lead shortly after the hour-mark but again United's response was swift.

Marcus Rashford made it 2-2 on 67 minutes before substitute Alejandro Garnacho assisted Fernandes and then Scott McTominay to send United into the last 16.

United's reward for beating Villa will be a home clash with Burnley, taking place just days after the World Cup final.
