Bruno Fernandes Confirmed As New Manchester United Captain In 95-Word Club Statement
Manchester United have officially confirmed that Bruno Fernandes has been appointed as the new club captain at Old Trafford.
Harry Maguire had been United's primary skipper since January 2020 but he was removed from the role last week by manager Erik ten Hag.
The news that Maguire would no longer be captaining United was communicated by the club in a 228-word statement released on Sunday.
Maguire was quoted within that statement as saying: "After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain. He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I'm personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt."
United released a much shorter statement - just 95 words in length - on Thursday when Fernandes was revealed as Maguire's successor.
Thursday's statement read: "Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United.
"The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team on a permanent basis.
"Fernandes has scored 64 goals and contributed 54 assists in just 185 games for the club since joining in 2020.
"As captain, the two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year will continue to drive the highest standards throughout the squad as United push for success in the 2023/24 season and beyond."
Maguire only started eight Premier League games last season so Fernandes, who was vice-captain, frequently wore the armband in his absence.
It is expected that United will be led by Raphael Varane or Casemiro when Fernandes is not on the field next season.
