Manchester United midfielder Casemiro deserved his red card in Sunday's 0-0 draw with Southampton, according to former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher.

Casemiro was originally shown a yellow card by Anthony Taylor for his over-the-ball challenge on Carlos Alcaraz before a VAR review saw it upgraded to a straight red.

This was Casemiro's second sending off of 2023, so he will now be suspended for United's next four domestic games - against Fulham, Newcastle, Brentford and Everton.

Many United fans on social media criticized Taylor's decision to dismiss Casemiro.

But Gallagher, who refereed in the Premier League between 1992 and 2007, is adamant that the Brazilian was rightly removed from the game.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Monday, Gallagher said: "I think definitely [it was a red card foul].

"He lunges in, skims the top of the ball and catches his opponent hard across the shin with his studs. I think it's a red card."

Gallagher added: "He's lost control of his body for a temporary second.

"He's reaching for the ball. He thinks he can win it but he's just mistimed it.

"The result is bad. It's a bad tackle."
