Chelsea End Worst Ever Premier League Season With 44 Points And Negative Goal Difference
Chelsea completed their worst season in Premier League history on Sunday by drawing 1-1 at home to Newcastle United.
Anthony Gordon put the Magpies ahead before a Kieran Trippier own goal earned Chelsea a point.
The Blues finished 12th in the table with just 44 points - the club's lowest tally since the EPL was founded in 1992 - and a goal difference of minus-nine.
The Stamford Bridge outfit had not ended a league campaign with a negative goal difference since 1995.
This was the first season in which Chelsea had earned fewer than 49 points since the last time they were relegated from England's top division in 1988.
Four different managers have been in charge of Chelsea during this dismal season.
It started with Thomas Tuchel, who was fired in September. He was replaced by Graham Potter but the former Brighton boss only lasted until April.
Bruno Saltor then oversaw one game, a 0-0 draw against Liverpool, before Frank Lampard took over for the final nine EPL matches of the season.
Under Lampard, Chelsea won just one league game, drew two and lost six.
Lampard will be replaced by Mauricio Pochettino before the start of next season.
