Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Diogo Jota will be unable to go to the World Cup with Portugal due to a calf injury.

Jota sustained the injury late on in Liverpool's 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

After running tests, Liverpool's doctors have ruled Jota out of action for multiple months.

"Really not good news about Diogo," Klopp told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday.

"Yes, he will miss the World Cup. Pretty serious injury in the calf muscle."

Klopp added: "Very sad news for the boy, for us of course as well, and for Portugal."

Jota's injury will be a big blow for Portugal, who will compete alongside Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea in Group H at Qatar 2022.

Since 2020, Jota has scored 10 international goals, making him Portugal's second-highest scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo during that period.

Jota will also be unavailable for Liverpool's eight games before the World Cup - against West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Ajax, Leeds, Napoli, Tottenham, Derby and Southampton.

Liverpool are running low on attacking options as Luis Diaz has also been ruled out for the rest of 2022.
