Erling Haaland Dethrones Kylian Mbappe As Youngest Player To Score 30 Champions League Goals... Before Equaling Lionel Messi's Record Of Five Strikes In One Game
Erling Haaland scored a first-half hat-trick to put Manchester City in firm control against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
City's clash with the Bundesliga outfit looked finely poised going into Tuesday's second leg following a 1-1 draw in Germany three weeks earlier.
But it was one-way traffic at the Etihad Stadium where City won 7-0 after Haaland steamrolled Leipzig into submission.
Haaland converted a penalty 22 minutes into the second leg before scoring again just 19 seconds after Leipzig had kicked off.
His second goal was a headed rebound after Kevin De Bruyne had rattled the crossbar.
It was also the 30th goal of Haaland's Champions League career.
Haaland then completed his 17th career hat-trick in first-half stoppage time with a scruffy finish from ultra close range after a headed effort from Ruben Dias had almost crossed the line.
He scored twice more in the first 12 minutes of the second half to become only the third player in UCL history - after Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano - to record five goals in one game.
City manager Pep Guardiola then took pity on Leipzig and subbed Haaland off for the final half-hour.
Haaland Makes UCL History
Haaland took just 25 games to score 30 Champions League goals, thus setting a new record for the fewest number of matches taken to reach the milestone.
The former Borussia Dortmund striker also became the youngest player in UCL history to score at least 30 goals, aged just 22 years and 236 days.
Kylian Mbappe had previously held the record after scoring his 30th Champions League goal at the age of 22 years and 352 days.
