Gus Poyet thinks that fellow Uruguayan Facundo Pellistri should stay at Manchester United this summer.

Pellistri moved to Old Trafford from Montevideo's Penarol in October 2020 but did not make his first-team debut for United until January this year.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder spent the second half of the 2020/21 season and the entirety of the following campaign on loan at Alaves in Spain.

Pellistri - who has been capped 12 times by Uruguay at senior international level - wanted to leave Old Trafford on loan again midway through the 2022/23 season but United blocked the move.

He then went on to feature in 10 games for the Red Devils during the second half of the campaign, impressing in flashes.

FC Twente are said to be keen to take Pellistri on loan for the upcoming season but Poyet believes that the player may be better off if he stays.

Speaking to FanNation Futbol this week, Poyet said: "For the first time last year, Pellistri had a chance to play a little bit under the coach, so I'm sure he would have had a conversation with the coach and he knows what the standard is.

"If he feels that he's going to be a part of the 18-man squad week-in, week-out, I would stay if I were him.

"Sometimes, you could move from a club thinking you're easily going to play somewhere else because you came from a club like Manchester United, but maybe the characteristics of the other team aren't for you or the team plays in a different way.

"He's a very specific player. He's a proper old-fashioned winger. His one-on-ones are very quick and he now has experience in the national team and in the Premier League so he should be a better player.

"But I don't know what the coach wants or what is going to happen, but I hope and think he should stay."

Former Chelsea and Spurs midfielder Poyet represented Uruguay 26 times between 1993 and 2000.

He has been managing the Greece men's national team since early last year.
