A soccer fan has died in Argentina after falling almost 50 feet from a grandstand at River Plate's Estadio Monumental.

Club officials said that 53-year-old Pablo Marcelo Serrano "died on the spot".

The fatal incident occurred during a match between River and Defensa y Justicia on Saturday.

The game was abandoned and the area was cordoned off by police officers and firefighters. An investigation into the death has been launched.

"The medical service immediately arrived at the area of ​​the incident, as did the police and various security agencies," read a club statement.

"The Sivori Alta grandstand was at 90% of its capacity. At the time of the fall, there was no intervention by third parties.

"It was also verified that there was no situation of violence in the stands or around it."
