England forward Lauren James has been handed a two-match ban by FIFA following her red card against Nigeria.

The Chelsea star was initially given an automatic one-game suspension.

But a FIFA panel decided on Thursday to increase her punishment due to the nature of the incident that had resulted in her being sent off.

James was dismissed in the 87th minute of England's round of 16 game at the Women's World Cup on Monday after she stamped on the backside of Michelle Alozie as the Nigeria player lay on the ground.

She later apologized to Alozie in a social media post.

England drew 0-0 with Nigeria before winning 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

James cannot play in Saturday's quarter-final against Colombia.

She will also be unavailable to feature in the semi-finals if the Lionesses progress that far.

England will face either Australia or France in the last four should they beat Colombia.

If England reach the final then James will be eligible for selection.

James had been England's star performer during the group stage, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
